The Free Directv Dvr Is Not Free For Everyone
Recently, DirecTV changed their free digital video recorder offer for both new and current subscribers. While new subscribers can still get the DirecTV DVR for free, current customers have been restricted from participating in the free digital video recorder deal.
New DirecTV customers can get a DirecTV digital video recorder for free, but the offer involves the hassle of a rebate. New customers must buy the system for around $100 USD and then send in the appropriate paperwork and sales slip to receive their rebate.
Additionally, new DirecTV subscribers that want to take advantage of the free digital video recorder offer must also agree to a two year programming plan. While this may seem quite reasonable, I don't know what I'm going to be doing two weeks from now, let alone two years.
I am reluctant to commit to a two year service contract and so the free digital video recorder deal doesn't work well for me. In my opinion it would be nice to receive a free digital video recorder for the duration of my subscription, but requiring a subscription contract is just too much for many customers to stomach, myself included.
For current DirecTV subscribers, the so-called free digital video recorder offer isn't any better. Current DirecTV customers must pay $148 for their digital video recorders. The $100 rebate is still good for current customers so this does offset the cost a little bit. With the $100 rebate the DirecTV digital video recorder costs around $48.
I think it's unfortunate the DirecTV rescinded their free DVR offer to new and current customers, particularly because it was one of the very rare deals where current subscribers received any type of bonus promotion.
Though the DirecTV DVR is a good deal overall, it doesn't look so good over a longer period of time, as it costs $5.99 per month to have recording privileges with DirecTV. Over a period of two years the cost of the DirecTV DVR comes to more than $120.
